Every week I hear some version of the same thing from expecting mamas: “I almost waited too long.” Sometimes they reach out at 36 weeks, hoping to squeeze in a session before their due date. Sometimes they call after the baby has already arrived, heartbroken that they never got maternity photos at all.
As a maternity photographer in Temecula with over 20 years of experience, I never want that to be your story. Timing is one of the most important parts of creating a maternity session you will love. Here is everything you need to know.
The Sweet Spot: 28 to 34 Weeks
The ideal window for maternity photos is between 28 and 34 weeks of pregnancy. Here is why this range works so well:
- Your bump is beautifully full and round – clearly a baby bump, not just a bloated belly
- You are still feeling comfortable enough to move, pose, and enjoy the experience
- Your skin often has that pregnancy glow that photographs so beautifully
- There is still time to plan outfits, choose locations, and get everything just right
- If you want outdoor photos during a specific season (like our spring bloom in Temecula), we have flexibility to schedule around the best conditions
This window feels long, but it goes faster than you expect. Most mamas I work with say the weeks between 20 and 28 fly by in a blur of appointments, baby showers, and nursery planning. By the time they come up for air, they are suddenly at 30 weeks – which is exactly why booking early matters.
What Happens When You Wait Until After 35 Weeks
I can absolutely work with mamas who are further along and I have created beautiful portraits at 36, 37, and even 38 weeks. But there are real limitations to waiting:
- Mobility and comfort become more challenging, which can limit posing options
- You may be dealing with swelling, fatigue, or discomfort that makes a long session harder
- My calendar may not have availability that works around your schedule and energy levels
- If you want outdoor photos during a specific season, waiting means risking a schedule mismatch
- There is always the chance of an early arrival – babies do not always wait for the due date
None of this means a late-pregnancy session cannot be beautiful. But the experience is almost always more relaxed, more enjoyable, and more photogenic when we have time on our side.
When Should You Actually Reach Out?
Here’s my honest recommendation: reach out as soon as you know you want maternity photos, even if your due date feels far away. Many of my clients contact me in their first or second trimester, we chat about what they’re envisioning, and then we formally book the session around 20 to 24 weeks.
This approach gives us the most flexibility. We can choose the best season for outdoor photos (spring in Temecula is especially magical right now – see my post on why Temecula’s outdoor locations are stunning this time of year). We can plan your wardrobe without rushing. And you can relax knowing that this detail is handled.
How Far in Advance Do Sessions Book Up?
My calendar typically books 6 to 8 weeks in advance, and certain times of year fill faster than others. Spring – when Temecula’s wildflowers are in bloom – is my most requested season for outdoor sessions, and those spots go quickly. Fall dates also fill fast, especially for golden hour sessions.
If there’s a specific date, season, or location you have your heart set on, earlier is always better.
What the Booking Process Looks Like
I know reaching out to a new photographer can feel like a big step, especially when you’re already managing a hundred other pregnancy to-dos. I’ve designed my process to be as simple and stress-free as possible:
- You reach out through my website or send me a DM – no lengthy forms or complicated intake
- We have a quick conversation about what you’re envisioning: indoor studio or outdoor locations?
- I walk you through your wardrobe options, including my client closet full of gorgeous maternity gowns
- We lock in your date and I send you everything you need to prepare – no guesswork on your end
- The week of your session, we confirm all the details and I answer any last questions
- You show up. I handle everything from there.
My goal is that by the time your session day arrives, you feel completely prepared, relaxed, and excited – not stressed.
What If You’re Already Past 34 Weeks?
Please still reach out. I genuinely love working with mamas at every stage, and even at 36 or 37 weeks I can often create something beautiful, especially in a studio setting where we have full control over lighting and posing. I would much rather work with you than have you miss this milestone entirely.
