Temecula & Murrieta Newborn and Family Photoshoot with Melissa Lyn
One of the first questions parents ask me after booking a session is: “What should we wear?” It’s a great question because the outfits you choose can completely shape the look and feel of your portraits. Clothing sets the tone, highlights your connection as a family, and ensures that your newborn remains the star of the show. As a Temecula and Murrieta newborn photographer, I’ve styled hundreds of sessions. Here are my best tips for what to wear for your newborn and family portraits.

Keep It Simple and Neutral
Neutral tones, creams, taupes, soft grays, and muted pastels always photograph beautifully. They don’t compete with your baby and create a timeless, organic look. Bright colors and busy patterns can be distracting and take attention away from your family’s connection. Think of your wardrobe as the backdrop for your love. When you look back at your photos years from now, you’ll be grateful for the simplicity.
If you’d like more inspiration, my What to Wear for Family Portraits blog includes examples and color palette ideas.
Coordinate, Don’t Match
Gone are the days of everyone wearing identical white shirts and jeans. Instead, aim for outfits that coordinate in tone and style. Choose two or three complementary colors and mix them throughout the family.
For example, mom might wear a cream dress, dad a soft gray shirt, and siblings muted pastels. The result feels cohesive but not overly staged.
Think About Texture
Soft, flowing fabrics like linen, cotton, or knits add dimension without overwhelming the photo. Textures photograph beautifully and enhance the cozy, organic feel of newborn portraits.
Accessories like a delicate knit swaddle or a soft headband can add variety while keeping the focus on your baby.
Choose Comfort Over Trend
You’ll be holding and cuddling your baby throughout the session, so it’s important to wear something you feel comfortable in. If you’re fidgeting or adjusting your outfit, it will show in the photos.
Comfort also applies to siblings. Outfits that are soft and easy to move in will keep little ones happier and more cooperative.

Use the Client Closet
One of the perks of booking with me is full access to my client closet, a curated collection of dresses for moms, soft pieces for little girls, and cozy outfits for newborns. Having wardrobe provided removes stress from your to-do list and ensures everything photographs beautifully.
Many of my clients tell me that the client closet was a lifesaver because it saved them from last-minute shopping trips.
Don’t Forget About Barefoot Moments
In newborn sessions, shoes are often unnecessary, especially for siblings and parents in studio sessions. Bare feet or simple socks feel natural and keep the focus on connection rather than accessories.
Final Tips for Success
- Lay outfits out together beforehand to see how they coordinate.
- Avoid logos, neon colors, or stiff fabrics.
- Choose clothing that feels timeless rather than trendy.
If you’re still unsure, I’m happy to help you plan. Styling support is part of every session, so you’ll never have to figure it out on your own.
