When you are in the middle of pregnancy or navigating those early newborn days, everything feels full. Your mind is on appointments, feedings, sleep schedules, and just getting through each day. It is such a busy, emotional season that you assume you will always remember it clearly.
I used to think that too.
Now that my kids are older, I can tell you firsthand how quickly the details soften. I have a 19 year old and a 16 year old, and sometimes I wish I could step back into those early days just for a moment. Not for the big milestones, but for the quiet in between.
The way they felt when I held them.
The sound of their little breaths.
The tiny expressions that were there one day and gone the next.
At the time, those moments felt ordinary. Looking back, they feel irreplaceable.

I say this to my clients all the time because we are often in such different stages of parenthood. Many of the families I photograph are becoming parents for the first time, while I am on the other side watching my kids grow into adults. It gives me a perspective I did not have back then.
If I could go back, I would slow down more. I would soak in the little things instead of assuming I would always remember them. That is part of what drives me to document these seasons for other families now, because I know how quickly they pass.
How Time Changes Your Perspective
When you are living it, you are focused on what is next. The next feeding, the next nap, the next stage. It is not until years later that you realize how fleeting those early chapters really were.
You do remember the big events, but the small details begin to blur. That is simply how memory works. Life keeps moving, and new seasons take over.
Photographs have a way of bringing you back. They remind you not just what your baby looked like, but how it felt to be in that season of life.

The Beauty of the Everyday
When I photograph families, I am not looking for perfection. I am watching for connection. The way a mom instinctively holds her baby or the way a parent looks at their child without even realizing it.
Those are the moments that tell the story of this stage in a way words cannot.

Looking Back With Gratitude
One of the things I appreciate most now is having images that bring me back to those early years. They remind me of a version of life that felt busy and exhausting at the time but now feels incredibly special.
You never realize while you are in it how quickly it becomes a memory.
