As a Temecula maternity photographer, I don’t often get a story like this one. There’s a profound shift when you cross from a decade as a duo into parenthood. This sweet couple has been together since they were sixteen. Turning 30 this year meant stepping into a completely new era, one they’d navigated together every step of the way. But the road to their baby boy held a moment they never saw coming.
How they found out
They’d been trying to conceive for a while and had a Monday morning appointment scheduled with a fertility specialist. Then, the Friday before, Mom noticed she felt off. One of her dogs, who normally preferred Dad, suddenly became hyper-attached, sniffing her belly and refusing to leave her side. On a whim, she took a test, bracing for another disappointing negative. When the second line appeared, she grabbed her husband’s hand the moment he walked through the door and led him straight to the bathroom without a word. Through tears of shock and joy, they knew their baby had finally arrived.
A Temecula Maternity Photographer’s Golden Hour Session
Mom admitted she felt nervous about being in front of the camera. She had very few photos of herself from her twenties, and with her 30th birthday and this pregnancy arriving in the same year, she didn’t want to look back with regret. During golden hour in the rolling hills of the valley, that nervousness melted into ease. We captured her glowing in the sunset light, alongside quiet moments with her husband, a true celebration of everything her body was doing. It’s a scene I love capturing as a Temecula maternity photographer – that shift from nervous to at ease once golden hour hits.

“I cannot recommend this photographer enough! From start to finish, my maternity and newborn sessions were absolutely perfect. I was nervous about being in front of the camera and even more nervous handing my newborn to someone else, but she made me feel comfortable immediately. She guided every pose, hyped me up, and made me feel genuinely beautiful during my maternity shoot… The final photos were breathtaking. The lighting, the editing, the colors, everything was consistent and absolutely stunning.”
A bittersweet day
Finding out they were expecting a boy was pure magic. Both of their families are heavily dominated by girls, so Dad had his eyes locked on the ultrasound screen the whole time. When the sonographer announced it was a boy, he flashed the biggest smile Mom had ever seen. He finally had his little buddy.
That same afternoon brought a heartbreaking goodbye. Their 15-and-a-half-year-old Chihuahua, Rascal, had been Mom’s constant companion since she was 14. He’d been fighting cancer, and at the vet that afternoon, they made the devastating choice to let him go. Mom navigated the highest high and the lowest low of her life in a single day. Dad found a way to comfort her that she’ll carry forever: Rascal loved her so much, he said, that he had to go to heaven so he could send down a baby boy to watch over her in his place.
A few more details
In early pregnancy, Mom craved bagels in bed to fight the nausea. Later, weekend grilled steaks became her go-to. Her advice for other expecting moms: stay off social media if you find yourself comparing your journey to others, since every pregnancy looks different.
This tight-knit, Southern California-native couple can’t wait to show their son their favorite local spots, from camping grounds to off-road trails.
