Fall is, without question, the busiest family portrait season in Temecula, and for good reason. The light is golden, the energy after summer feels like a fresh start, and everyone wants that one good family photo before the holidays arrive. Here’s everything to know to prepare, from booking to session day.
Step 1: Book earlier than feels necessary
Fall dates go fast. If you have a specific date or milestone in mind (before a move, before a birthday, before the holidays), reach out well ahead. I keep my calendar intentionally small so every family gets my full attention, which means the trade-off is fewer open spots.
Step 2: Think about timing, not just the date
Golden hour, the hour or so before sunset, gives us the warm, soft light that makes fall portraits feel the way they do. I shoot Monday through Friday, so we’ll find that golden-hour light on a weekday evening rather than a weekend. If you have toddlers, we’ll also talk through scheduling around naps; a session before dinner tends to work better than one squeezed into an already-tired part of the day.
Step 3: Choose a palette, not an outfit
This is the question I get more than any other: what do we wear? My answer is always the same: pick a color palette, not matching clothes. Soft neutrals, warm tones, dusty blues and greens all photograph beautifully in Southern California’s fall light. Avoid bright colors and distracting logos; they pull the eye away from faces. Mix in a few different textures, like a linen shirt, a flowy dress, or a soft knit, so the group looks coordinated without looking costumed.
Pro tip: start by choosing mom’s outfit first, and build the rest of the family around that. Pick something mom feels comfortable and confident in, then pull colors from mom’s outfit for everyone else.
Step 4: Let go of “perfect behavior”
If you have young kids, here’s what two decades of family sessions has taught me: the magic isn’t in the perfectly posed, everyone-looking-at-the-camera shot. It’s in the real moments: the mid-giggle, the running toward the camera, the little sister who won’t stop looking at her big brother instead of me, the goofy smile stage (or the not-smiling stage!) your little one is in right now. Give yourself permission to let the session be a little messy. That’s usually where the best images live. It’s about capturing your family as you are now, at this exact stage in your life.
Step 5: Trust the process on session day
You don’t need to arrive with a shot list or a Pinterest board of poses (though you’re welcome to share inspiration ahead of time). I’ll guide the group through natural movement, prompts, and connection-based direction so everyone, including the reluctant teenager or squirmy toddler, ends up in front of the camera looking like themselves. And if you want to bring grandparents along, there’s always room for them in the session too.
A note on why fall books up so fast
Families come out of summer wanting to document their kids before another year passes, and everyone is chasing the same handful of golden-hour weekday evenings. If you’ve been meaning to book “eventually,” this is genuinely the week to turn that into a real date.
