Newborn Photoshoot in Temecula: What to Expect at Your Shoot

Newborn Photoshoot in Temecula with Melissa Lyn Photography

Welcoming a new baby into your life is one of the most magical experiences you’ll ever have, and capturing those early days with a newborn photoshoot is such a special way to preserve these fleeting moments. As a Temecula and Murrieta newborn photographer, I love creating timeless portraits that you’ll treasure forever. If you’re planning your first newborn photoshoot, you might be wondering what to expect. Don’t worry—I’ve got you covered! Here’s everything you need to know to ensure your session is smooth, enjoyable, and filled with adorable moments.

The Basics: What to Expect

Newborn sessions typically last up to 3 hours, giving us plenty of time to work at your baby’s pace. If a toddler is joining the session, it may take up to 4 hours—and that’s totally okay! These sessions are all about patience and flexibility, ensuring we capture those perfect, sleepy poses.

To keep your baby comfortable, the studio will be warm—think cozy and toasty—to help them settle and stay asleep. (Pro tip: Dress in layers so you don’t get too warm yourself!) I’ll provide bottled water, but feel free to bring your favorite refreshments if you’d like.

And let’s talk about the not-so-glamorous side of things: babies pee and poop on everything! That’s completely normal, and trust me, I’ve seen it all. Everything we use is washable, so there’s no need to stress. It’s also a good idea to bring a change of clothes for yourself, just in case your little one has an accident during a feeding or family pose.

Preparing Your Baby: The Secret to a Sleepy Session

One of the most important things you can do before your newborn photoshoot is to keep your baby awake and alert for about two hours beforehand. Playtime, a gentle bath, or some light stimulation can help. The goal is to have them nice and sleepy when you arrive, which makes it easier to capture those sweet, peaceful poses.

If your baby tends to fall asleep in the car, let that happen! Just try not to feed them right before walking into the studio, as it can disturb their sleep. Instead, plan to give them a full feeding about 20-30 minutes before the session begins. If they need a quick top-up once you arrive, I’ll let you know so we can keep them content and settled.

For breastfeeding moms, I recommend avoiding spicy or gassy foods (like broccoli or beans), heavy dairy, caffeine, and chocolate for 24 hours before the session. These foods can upset your baby’s tummy. And yes, this means skipping that morning coffee—but I promise it’ll be worth it for a happy, calm baby!

What to Bring

To make your session as smooth as possible, here are some essentials to pack:

  • Extra bottles of formula or pumped breast milk
  • Wipes for quick clean-ups
  • A pacifier (even if you don’t normally use one, it can be helpful for the session. Please remove any Wubbanub friends for us.)

Dress your baby in a loose-fitting button-up or zip-up sleeper—nothing that needs to be pulled over their head. This makes changing and undressing them easier and keeps them calm.

During the Session

Once you arrive, it’s time to relax and let me take over! I’ll work through a variety of poses and props to create beautiful, artistic images. If your baby becomes fussy or needs a little break, don’t worry—I have plenty of soothing techniques to help them settle. We’ll also save family and sibling shots for the end of the session, after we’ve captured those solo newborn moments.

For safety and focus, I kindly ask that no cameras or phones be used during the session. Trust me—the final images will be well worth the wait!
