If your due date falls anywhere between November and January, I want you to read this before you close the tab and tell yourself you’ll deal with it later.
Every year, the same thing happens. Mamas with fall bumps spend the summer distracted: nursery projects, baby showers, the last normal weeks before baby. Then October hits. They think, “I should probably book a newborn photographer.” Then they call, and my calendar is already full for their exact window.
Here’s the part that catches people off guard: newborn sessions need to happen in the first 7–14 days of life. That’s not a preference, it’s biology. That sleepy, curled-up newness fades fast. Your session date isn’t really tied to a month on the calendar. It’s tied directly to your due date, with almost no flexibility on either side.
A December baby needs a December session. That’s right in the middle of the single busiest stretch of my entire year.

Why winter babies are the hardest to book
Holiday season does two things at once. It’s when the most babies happen to arrive. (There’s a real spike in September conceptions nine months out, you can do that math). And my calendar is already carrying fall newborns, fall minis, and fall family sessions. Winter due dates compete for a shrinking number of open dates. Families are also fitting in holiday card photos and last-minute portraits before the year ends. It’s the same shrinking window.
The timeline that actually works
Here’s what I walk every expecting family through:
Second trimester: Reach out and get on my calendar, even if your due date feels far away. This is a conversation, not a commitment to a rigid date. We talk through your vision and your due date range, and I hold space for you.
Third trimester: We confirm the details, wardrobe, client closet pulls, any props or family members joining. And we sketch a loose plan for the moment baby arrives.
The day baby is born: You send one text. That’s it. I take the reins from there and confirm your exact session date within your 7–14 day window. You get to just be with your baby.
What happens if you wait
I say this gently, because pregnancy already comes with a hundred things to think about. The families who wait until their baby arrives to start looking are the ones I most often have to turn away. This happens most during winter months. It’s not because I don’t want to work with them. The math simply doesn’t work. There are only so many days in a 7–14 day window, and only so many of those days are open on my calendar.

If you’re due this winter
Reach out now, while you still have full pick of dates and time for an unhurried conversation about what you’re envisioning. You’ll spend the rest of your pregnancy with this one thing already handled. If you’ve been pregnant before, you know that’s worth more than it sounds.
One small note for later: once your baby arrives, I’d love to keep capturing the milestones that follow too. Think the sitter stage around 6 months, and that first birthday. No need to think about that now. Just know it’s there when the time comes.
