If you’re feeling nervous about your maternity photos, or not even sure you want to do them at all, I want you to know exactly what to expect before you decide anything. That nervousness is normal, and it’s not a sign this isn’t for you.
This isn’t a checklist of what to prepare. I’ve already written that guide if you want the practical details, timing, wardrobe, what to bring. This is what the experience is really like, from the first message to the moment you see your gallery.
It starts with one conversation, not a checklist
You don’t need to arrive at our first conversation with a Pinterest board, a location picked out, and an outfit already chosen. Most of my Murrieta clients start with a simple message: “I’m due in December, what do I need to know?” That’s plenty. From there, we talk through your due date, your vision, and what feels most like you. I handle the logistics from there, wardrobe and timing included.

The moment most moms are dreading
If I’m honest, the nerves I hear about most often aren’t about posing or timing. They’re about not recognizing the person in the mirror anymore. A body that’s changed faster than you’ve had time to process, a face that looks tired even when you feel fine, a nagging feeling that you’re just not photogenic right now. Some moms tell me they’re not even sure they want to document this stage at all. I want to say this directly: that feeling is normal, and it has nothing to do with how your photos will turn out, or whether this is worth doing. I’ve photographed hundreds of pregnant bellies, and the moms who feel the most unsure walking in are almost always the ones who love their gallery the most once they see it. You don’t need to feel confident before your session, and you definitely don’t need to know how to pose. I’ll handle both, including the moment you catch yourself in a pose and think, “wait, that actually looks good.”
What actually happens to your nerves once we start shooting
Something predictable happens about ten minutes into almost every maternity session: the nervous energy settles. You see the back of the camera, realize the photos already look nothing like what you were bracing for, and something shifts. I’ve watched it happen enough times to know it’s not a fluke. Part of my job is simply getting you to that ten-minute mark as gently as possible.

Your partner is part of the experience, not just the schedule
If your partner is joining, I build in real time for the two of you, not just a couple of shots squeezed in at the end. Some of my favorite moments happen in that window: a quiet joke between you two, a hand resting on your belly, a look that has nothing to do with the camera. Those are usually the images clients come back to first.t.
The gallery reveal is part of the experience too
The reassurance doesn’t end when the session does. You come back in for your reveal and ordering session, where we go through your gallery together in person. Most moms tell me that appointment is almost as emotional as the shoot itself, seeing yourself the way everyone else already sees you, not just tired, but strong and unmistakably you. I guide you through choosing your favorites and how you actually want to enjoy them, whether that’s wall art for your home, an album you’ll keep for years, or something else entirely, so that part feels just as easy as everything that came before it.
What clients say afterward
The thing I hear more than almost anything else, from Murrieta moms especially, is that the session felt like an hour of being celebrated rather than photographed.
“I was hesitant about booking a maternity session and almost decided to not do one, but then came photoshoot day and you made me feel so beautiful and most of all comfortable. The pictures far exceeded my expectations and now I’m so thankful I have this beautiful time in my life captured. Thank you.” – Tiffany
The real answer if you’re nervous about maternity photos
In twenty years, I’ve never had a single client regret documenting this stage. The regret I hear about, every time, comes from the moms who didn’t. Feeling nervous, unsure of your body, unsure you’re even photogenic right now, none of that has to be the reason you skip it. It’s a calm first conversation, permission to feel exactly how you feel about your body right now, and a partner who’s genuinely part of the session, so that you walk away with the photos instead of the regret of not having them. If you want the practical side, timing, wardrobe, what to bring, that’s all in my full prep guide. It’s the same full-service approach I bring to your newborn session once your baby arrives, so you’re not starting from scratch a few months from now. Here’s what to look for in a newborn photographer if you’re a nervous first-time parent.
