Your Complete Guide to a Stress-Free Maternity Session

You’ve booked your maternity session. Congratulations, that’s the hard part done. Now comes the question I hear more than almost any other: “Okay, so what do I actually need to do to get ready?”

Here’s your full answer, start to finish.

Timing: when to schedule your maternity session

The sweet spot for maternity photos is 28-34 weeks. Your bump is beautifully round and defined by this point, but you’re still comfortable enough to stand, pose, and move for an hour without your feet screaming at you by the end. If you know your due date, count backward. For a September due date, that window opens in July. For a November due date, it opens in September.

Wardrobe: the part everyone stresses over most

Here’s the good news: you don’t need to shop for anything. My client closet is stocked with maternity gowns curated specifically for outdoor and studio sessions, flowing fabrics, soft colors, styles that photograph beautifully in Southern California light. You’ll get to try things on and choose what makes you feel most like yourself.

If you’d rather wear your own clothing for part of the session (a lot of moms like one “just us” look in something from home), stick to soft, solid colors or subtle textures. Busy patterns and logos pull attention away from your face and your bump, which is the whole point of these photos.

Skin and hair: keep it simple, or go all in

Drink extra water in the days leading up to your session. It genuinely helps skin look its best on camera. Beyond that, do your hair and makeup the way that makes you feel like yourself, whether that’s full glam or completely bare-faced. Both photograph beautifully. This isn’t about looking like someone else’s Pinterest board, it’s about looking like you, glowing.

If you’d rather be extra pampered for the day and have your hair and makeup done professionally, just ask. I keep a short list of favorite local hair and makeup artists I’m happy to refer you to.

What to expect the day of

You show up. That’s really the instruction. I guide every single pose so you never have to wonder what to do with your hands or how to angle your body. You just follow along, and I handle the technical side (lighting, location, timing) completely.

If your partner or kids are joining for part of the session, we’ll build in time for those images too, separate from your solo portraits, so nobody feels rushed.

A few practical notes

Wear comfortable clothes and shoes to and from the location, and avoid anything that could leave marks on your baby bump, like a tight waistband. You can always slip into whatever we’re using for photos once we’re set up. Bring a light snack and water, since standing for photos while pregnant works up an appetite faster than you’d think. And give yourself grace if you need extra breaks. I’ve never once had a maternity session where a break derailed anything.

The bottom line

A stress-free maternity session isn’t about arriving perfectly prepared. It’s about knowing what to expect, having the wardrobe question already solved, and working with someone who guides you through the rest. That’s exactly what a full-service maternity session with Melissa Lyn Photography looks like, and it’s the same approach I bring to your newborn session once your baby arrives.
