How to Prep for Newborn Photos When You’re Exhausted

How to Prep for Your Newborn Session When You’re Running on No Sleep

Let me guess: your baby is somewhere between three and ten days old, your newborn session is coming up in the next few days, and you are running on a level of tired you did not know was possible. Someone just reminded you about your session and your immediate reaction was mild panic.

Take a breath. I have been photographing newborns for over 20 years, and I have never once had a session derailed by a tired parent or an unpredictable baby. This post exists so that you walk in feeling prepared instead of overwhelmed – because the only thing you actually need to bring is yourself and your baby. I handle everything else.

The Night Before: Keep It Simple

The most important thing you can do the night before your session is lower your expectations for how prepared you need to be. You do not need to have everything perfect. Here is a realistic checklist:

  • Lay out two or three outfits you might want to wear – loose, comfortable, in neutral or soft tones. If you are using my client closet, simply confirm which pieces we discussed and I will have them ready. Be sure to bring a strapless bra if needed.
  • Pack a small bag with feeding supplies, extra milk, an extra set of clothes for baby, and anything that helps soothe your little one – a pacifier, a favorite swaddle, whatever works. If you forget, no worries! My studio is stocked with diapers, wipes and brand new pacifiers.
  • Try to feed your baby right before you leave so that they arrive full and drowsy. A full baby is a sleepy baby, and a sleepy baby is a cooperative subject.
  • Do not stress about your hair or makeup. Genuinely. A little mascara and some lip gloss is plenty. My lighting is flattering by design.

The Morning of Your Session

Give yourself more time than you think you need to get out the door. New baby logistics take longer than expected – that is just the reality. Plan to arrive five to ten minutes early so that you can get settled without feeling rushed the moment you walk in.

When you arrive, my studio is warm and calm and already set up for your session so that we can start whenever your baby is ready – not on a rigid schedule. We will check in about how the last few days have been, talk through anything on your mind, and then let your baby lead the pace from there.

What to Do if Your Baby Is Fussy

Fussy babies are completely normal and not a sign that your session is in trouble. Here is what helps most:

  • Feed on demand throughout the session – there are no rules about pausing. A fed baby is a calm baby.
  • White noise is magic – I use it throughout every session so that the studio environment feels familiar and soothing.
  • Skin-to-skin contact between poses helps babies resettle quickly. I will guide you through this.
  • Temperature matters – newborns settle best when they are warm. My studio is kept warmer than you might expect, which is completely intentional.

The most important thing you can do when your baby is fussy is stay calm yourself. Babies feel everything – your tension, your worry, your relief. When you are relaxed, they settle faster. And I am very good at helping both of you get there.

What About You?

New parents often spend so much energy preparing their baby for the session that they forget to think about themselves. So here is your gentle reminder: you matter in these photos too.

Wear something that makes you feel like yourself – comfortable but put together. Avoid busy patterns and bright colors, which can distract from the real subject. If you are using a piece from my client closet, I have already curated it to photograph beautifully so that you do not have to think about it at all.

And please be in the photos. I know you are tired. I know you do not feel your best. But in ten years, the image of you holding your brand new baby in those first days is going to be one of the most treasured things you own. I promise you will not regret it.

After Your Session

Once we wrap up, go home and sleep. Seriously. Your ordering appointment comes a few weeks later, after you have had some time to recover and the newborn haze has lifted just enough for you to enjoy looking at your images. That appointment is one of my favorite parts of the entire process – and I promise you are going to love it.
