How To Prepare For Your Newborn Session

Now that you and baby are home, it’s finally time for those newborn photos. Maybe you’ve been imagining them for months—your precious little one swaddled in a blanket, fawned over by you and your whole family. Here are some tips for preparing for your newborn photo shoot!

1. Don’t stress over what your baby will wear for the session.

The best wardrobe for a newborn is nothing. You definitely want your photos to capture those precious little legs and arms and that soft baby skin! My studio is stocked with everything we need for your baby’s session, including wraps and super cute tiny little outfits that are handmade especially for newborn photographers.

 2. Talk to big brothers and sisters.

Including siblings in your newborn portraits is a wonderful way to document this big change in the life of your family. Explain to your other children the importance of behaving and listening to the photographer during your session. My studio is stocked with snacks and beverages for the entire family, but if there is a extra special treat you know your kids would love as a reward, feel free to bring it! I do have smarties and organic lollipops in the studio we can reward your kids with as well.

 3. Plan your own look.

While the photos will mostly be of your newborn, you’ll want photos of the two of you as well. Be sure to take time to choose your own outfit. Go for something simple and comfortable. You don’t have to wear makeup, but a little bit can help you feel fresher and at ease in front of the camera. Neturals photograph best!

 4. Maintain a consistent routine.

Make sure not to make any changes to baby’s diet or routine prior to the shoot. Continue to feed your little one as you normally do, and bring along plenty of bottles for the photo session. I also suggest bringing a soothie pacifier (the bendable greenish ones) they don’t leave marks on the face. I keep unopened soothies as well as plenty of newborn diapers here in the studio, in case you forget. You’ll also want to do your best to keep baby awake before the shoot, so they’ll more easily fall asleep for those cute, snuggly shots we all love.

5. Relax and trust your photographer.

You’ve chosen your newborn photographer for their skill and experience. They’ll know how to safely and sweetly pose your baby and take images that you’ll cherish for years to come. The safety of your newborn is my top priority. I have been photographing newborns for over 15 years and have done extensive training and many workshops over the years. So you can be relax knowing that your baby will be in good hands at your session.
