A Cup of Tea & A Lifetime of Love: Photographing Lorraine’s Dream

Some sessions stay with you long after you pack up your camera. This is one of them.

I recently had the profound honor of being invited into something incredibly sacred – a final wish. Through the Dream Foundation, an organization that has been giving life to final dreams for terminally ill adults since 1994, I was asked to be the Dream Foundation photographer for a tea party honoring an 88-year-old woman named Lorraine.

A tea party sounds simple. But nothing about this day was simple. Everything about it was everything.

A Lifetime Poured Into Every Cup

Lorraine has spent a lifetime hosting tea parties for the people she loves most – her children, her grandchildren, pouring tea into china she painted herself. I walked into her home and was immediately stopped in my tracks by her china cabinet: shelves upon shelves of teacups, teapots, and platters, each one painted by her own hands. It is a quiet museum of a life lived with beauty and intention. And on the table, those same hand-painted teapots and sugar bowls gleamed with soft florals and gold trim, ready to serve one more time. Resting beside a teacup were two small porcelain brooches – each painted with a single flower. A yellow rose. A pink blossom. I don’t know their full story, but I know they meant something. Everything in that room meant something.

On June 13th, surrounded by her daughters and her granddaughter – two who live nearby, and one who flew in from Tennessee and one from Kentucky, both made possible by the Dream Foundation. Lorraine got to do what she’s always done best: bring her family to the table.

The table itself was a dream. Catered beautifully by Great Scott BBQ, it was set with tiered stands filled with blueberry and plain scones, open-faced finger sandwiches, lemon bars, chocolate brownies adorned with delicate edible butterflies and flowers, powdered sugar cream puffs, and fresh strawberries. Jars of jam, ramekins of cream, gold flatware on soft pink napkins, and vases of fresh roses in every shade of pink and yellow completed a spread that looked like something out of a storybook.

I walked in with my camera and tried to be as invisible as possible, because what was happening in that room didn’t need me. It only needed them. Daughters who know their mother’s laugh by heart. A granddaughter whose face lit up just being close to her. And Lorraine – radiant, teacup in hand, mid-conversation and mid-laugh at the center of all of it, exactly where she belonged. The Dream Foundation’s mission is to serve terminally ill adults and their families by providing end-of-life dreams that offer inspiration, comfort, and closure. I watched all three happen in real time.

I don’t take lightly what it means to be trusted with moments like these. To be the one holding the camera when a family gathers around someone they are learning to say goodbye to, it is the most humbling work I have ever done. I hope these photographs give Lorraine and her family something to hold onto. A way to remember the warmth in that room. The sound of laughter over tea. The way love shows up, even in the hardest seasons of life.

I’ll be honest with you: I’ve learned through my own grief. Through losing my father and understanding firsthand how desperately you reach for photographs of someone you love, that someday, one of Lorraine’s daughters is going to open this gallery and hear her mother’s laugh all over again. Her granddaughter is going to see the way she held her teacup. They’re going to remember exactly how it felt to be in that room. That’s what photographs do. That’s why this work matters more to me than I’ll ever be able to fully explain.
