Why Temecula Families Who Book Fall Portraits in July Never Regret It
Every October I have the same conversation with families who reach out hoping to book fall portraits before the holidays. They have a specific vision – golden hour light, the whole family together, something beautiful for the wall before Thanksgiving. And every October, I have to tell some of them that I am already fully booked.
I hate that conversation. Which is exactly why I am writing this post in July – so that you are not the family I have to turn away in October.
Why Fall Books Faster Than Any Other Season
Fall family portrait season in Temecula is unlike any other time of year. Families emerge from summer wanting to document their kids before the holidays. Mamas due in September, October, and November are booking their newborn sessions. The light is golden and soft and absolutely stunning for outdoor portraits. Everyone wants the same thing at the same time.
Add to that the fact that I intentionally keep my calendar small – so that every family gets my full attention and my best work – and you have a season that fills months in advance. The families who book in July get their preferred date, their preferred time, and their preferred location. The families who wait until September get whatever is left.
What You Actually Get When You Book Early
Beyond securing your spot, booking early means the entire experience is more relaxed – for you and for me. Here is what that looks like in practice:
- We have time to plan your wardrobe so that everyone is coordinated and comfortable – not thrown together the night before
- We can talk through locations so that your session happens somewhere that feels meaningful, not just wherever happened to be available
- If you have young children, we can discuss timing so that we schedule around naps and energy levels instead of fighting against them
- If you want outdoor portraits at a specific location during golden hour, we can lock in the right evening rather than taking whatever slot is open
- You have time to think about what products you want – wall art, albums, holiday cards – so that the ordering process feels exciting rather than rushed

For Families With Young Kids
I hear it all the time: getting toddlers to cooperate during family portraits feels impossible. The secret is not finding the perfectly behaved toddler – it is finding the right photographer and the right timing. After 20 years of working with families, I know how to get genuine smiles and connected moments from even the most energetic two-year-old.
The key is keeping things moving, keeping things fun, and scheduling your session at a time when your kids are at their best – usually late afternoon before dinner, not during nap time. When we have time to plan this properly, the session flows naturally. When families book last minute, we are working against the clock and everyone feels it.
This Is Also the Time to Book Holiday Newborn Sessions
If you are expecting a baby in September, October, November, or December, your newborn session falls squarely in my busiest season. Newborn sessions need to happen in the first 7-14 days of life – which means your session date is directly tied to your due date in a way that leaves very little flexibility.
Booking now, during your pregnancy, is how you guarantee that I am available when your baby arrives. I hold your spot, we stay in touch as your due date approaches, and I confirm everything once your little one makes their entrance. You do not have to think about a single logistic in those first foggy days of new parenthood.
