A Day in the Life of a Newborn Session

One of the questions I hear most from expecting parents is what a newborn session is actually like. If you have never done one before, it can feel a little unknown.

Will the baby cooperate?
What if they cry?
What should we bring?

These are all completely normal thoughts, especially when you are in the early days of parenthood and everything still feels new.

The truth is, newborn sessions are designed to feel calm, flexible, and fully guided. My role is to create a space where you can simply show up and settle in while I take care of the rest.

The Morning Begins

All newborn sessions take place in the morning, starting at 10am in the studio. Mornings tend to be the most peaceful time for babies, and it allows us to move at a slower pace without feeling rushed.

When you arrive, there is no pressure to jump right in. We take time to get baby settled, talk through the flow of the session, and ease into things naturally.

Starting With Baby

We begin with baby portraits first while everything is quiet and relaxed. This is often when babies are sleepiest, which allows us to capture those curled up, peaceful moments that parents love so much.

The pace is always led by your baby. If they need to eat, we pause. If they need to be soothed, we take our time. Nothing is forced, and there is always space to adjust.

Including Siblings

For families with older children, I often suggest having mom and baby arrive first so we can focus on baby portraits, then having a partner or grandparent bring siblings toward the end of the session.

This approach tends to make the experience feel much easier for everyone, especially moms who may be worried about keeping toddlers occupied for a longer period of time.

If that is not possible, siblings are always welcome to stay for the entire session. The goal is to create a relaxed environment, not a rigid timeline.

I also love letting siblings choose small details like a headband or a little prop. It helps them feel included and proud of their role in the session.

Parent and Family Portraits

Once baby portraits are complete, we move into parent and family images. This part of the session is always simple and guided. You do not need to worry about posing or knowing what to do.

My job is to gently guide you into positions that feel natural so you can focus on being present with your baby.

Including Grandparents

Another part of newborn sessions that I personally love is when grandparents join for a few portraits. This stage is not only a big transition for parents, it is also incredibly meaningful for the generations before them.

There is something really special about capturing those first moments of connection between a grandparent and a brand new baby. These images often become some of the most treasured ones over time.

If you are considering including grandparents, we can absolutely plan for that. I wrote more about why these portraits can feel so meaningful.

A Calm and Supported Experience

Many parents tell me they expected the session to feel more stressful than it actually did. Instead, they often describe it as one of the first chances they have had to slow down since bringing their baby home.

That is exactly what I hope for. A space where you can breathe, watch your baby, and know everything is being taken care of.

Looking Back on These First Days

The newborn stage is brief, even though it can feel long when you are in it. Having images from this time allows you to revisit a season that changes almost overnight.

You do not need your baby to be perfectly calm or everything to go exactly as planned. The beauty of these sessions is capturing your baby just as they are.
