5 Ways to Prepare Siblings for a Murrieta Newborn Photo Session

Murrieta Newborn Photo Session with Melissa Lyn

Bringing a new baby home is a big change for the entire family – but especially for older siblings. They’re adjusting to their new role, and that comes with excitement, nerves, and sometimes a little resistance. Parents often share with me that their biggest worry heading into a newborn session is how their toddler will behave. Will they cooperate? Will they melt down? Will we actually get any good sibling photos?

Here’s what I want you to know: sibling portraits almost always turn out to be some of the sweetest images from a newborn session. With a little preparation – and the right approach in the studio – those moments can be stress-free and truly priceless.

I’ve shot Murrieta newborn photo sessions for over 20 years, so I’ve definitely learned what works when it comes to siblings. Here are five simple ways to set your little ones up for success.

1. Timing is Everything

All of my newborn sessions are held weekday mornings in the studio.. Some children need a little time to warm up in a new space before they’re ready to participate – and that’s completely normal.

If you’re worried about keeping toddlers entertained for a full 2–3 hour session, here’s a tip that many families love: have just mom and baby arrive at the studio first. This allows me to focus on all of the baby’s portraits while siblings stay home and play. Toward the end of the session, dad, a partner, or even a grandparent can bring siblings for their part. They’ll arrive fresh, and we’ll capture their photos quickly and happily.

Of course, siblings of all ages are welcome to stay for the entire session. If that’s what works best for your family, we’ll simply adjust around their energy levels. The most important thing is not to stress – we’ll get those sweet sibling shots no matter what.

2. Bring a Small Surprise or Reward

A little incentive goes a long way with kids. Whether it’s a favorite snack, a new sticker, or the promise of ice cream afterward, siblings love knowing something fun is waiting for them.

It doesn’t need to be extravagant – often, the simplest rewards are the most effective. The goal is to keep the session fun and lighthearted for them, which in turn creates more natural smiles and genuine expressions.

3. Give Them a Special Role

Children thrive when they feel important. During sessions, I often let siblings choose a prop or accessory for their baby brother or sister – like selecting a headband or a little “lovie” (a tiny stuffed animal) for baby to hold.

This simple act makes them feel included in the process. From there, I’ll encourage small interactions: holding the baby’s hand, leaning in for a kiss, or wrapping an arm around their sibling. These little moments often become the most treasured portraits in your gallery.

4. Keep Expectations Realistic

Toddlers aren’t designed to sit perfectly still and smile on command – and that’s okay. Some of the most memorable sibling portraits come from candid, authentic moments.

Your child may be wiggly, shy, or even a little silly. Instead of forcing “perfection,” I work with their personality and pace. By keeping expectations realistic, we remove pressure and allow genuine connection to shine through.

5. Trust the Process

This is the most important tip of all. After photographing hundreds of newborns and their siblings, I’ve truly seen it all – from toddlers who want to be in every single shot to older kids who need encouragement to warm up.

My role is to guide the process with patience and creativity so you end up with beautiful images regardless of what unfolds in the moment. Even when sessions feel a little chaotic to parents, the final portraits always reflect love, connection, and joy.

The Beauty of Sibling Portraits

Years from now, these portraits will mean more than you can imagine. They’ll take you back to the very beginning of your children’s bond — when your firstborn suddenly looked so big standing next to their tiny sibling. These images aren’t just photographs, they’re family treasures that will be shared for generations.
