After 20 years of newborn photography sessions, I’ve had thousands of conversations with first-time moms in the days before their appointment. Almost every one of them is nervous about something they’ve never actually been told. So here’s the honest list, the things I wish every mom knew going in.
-
You will not be “on a schedule.”
Newborn sessions move at your baby’s pace, not a clock’s. Feeding, soothing, changing – all of it happens as needed, as many times as needed. Nobody is watching the minutes tick by but me, and I’ve built plenty of room into every appointment.
-
Crying is not a crisis.
A crying baby is one of the most normal parts of a newborn session. I have techniques for soothing that most parents haven’t seen yet, and a fussy stretch in the middle of a session has never once ruined the final images.
-
You do not need to look “ready.”
Exhausted, makeup-free, running on two hours of sleep – I promise you, it will not show the way you think it will in your photos. I’ve photographed thousands of new moms in exactly this state, and the images are always beautiful.

-
Your baby doesn’t need to be asleep the whole time.
Some of the most treasured images are the ones with baby’s eyes wide open, or mid-yawn, or looking right at the camera. Sleepy poses are gorgeous, but they’re not the only goal.
-
The temperature will feel warm – on purpose.
My studio runs warmer than your house for a reason: it keeps baby calm and comfortable enough to settle into those curled-up newborn poses. Dress in layers you can shed.
-
You get a say in everything.
From colors to poses to which family combinations we photograph, this is your session. I guide, but I’m always checking in on what you’re envisioning.
-
Siblings and grandparents are welcome, and they often steal the show.
If you have older kids, bring them. Some of my favorite images from any session are the unscripted ones between a new baby and an older sibling. And if grandma and grandpa want to be part of the day, please bring them too. I love including grandparents in newborn sessions, and I’ve written a whole post on why grandparents belong in your newborn photoshoot. A photo of tiny fingers wrapped around grandpa’s hand, or three generations in one frame, becomes one of the most treasured images a family owns. (A note on pets: since my studio is a shared, allergy-conscious space, newborn studio sessions stay pet-free. For outdoor sessions, your pet is welcome, just bring along a second person to hold the leash for the parts of the session they’re not in, since I can’t wrangle a leash and shoot at the same time.)

-
You will probably cry, and it’s usually not from exhaustion.
It tends to happen mid-session, the moment you catch a glimpse on my screen of your baby looking impossibly perfect in a setup, pose, or outfit I’ve put together just for them. Moms see that image and just melt. That’s honestly the moment I love most: watching the magic unfold in real time.
-
There is no “wrong” way to hold your baby.
I gently guide hand placement and positioning throughout, so you never have to worry about doing it “correctly.”

-
You’ll walk out relieved, not exhausted.
Almost every mom tells me the same thing on her way out the door: “That was so much easier than I expected.” That’s the goal, every time.
One more thing worth knowing
Newborn photography is its own specialty. It isn’t the same skill as being good with a camera, or even being a wonderful wedding or family photographer. Safely posing a two-week-old baby takes specific, hands-on training: how to properly support a newborn’s neck and spine, how to read their cues, how long a pose can safely hold, and when to stop and let baby reset.
That’s why I’ve spent years building that training, and safety is always my first priority, before any shot. So if you’re choosing a photographer for this stage, whether it’s me or someone else, it’s worth asking directly about their newborn-specific safety training, not just their portfolio. In fact, it’s one of the most important questions you can ask.
If you have an upcoming session
Take a breath. You do not have to have it together. You just have to show up, and I’ll take care of the rest, exactly the way I have for two decades of newborn families throughout Temecula, Murrieta, and everywhere in between. If you’re still deciding when to book, take a look at the newborn photography timeline for winter due dates for exactly when to reach out.
